Art Kisses from Heaven–An Art Full Day

Board Meeting and Subcommittee Meetings–4×4 Truck Beds!

I don’t know about you, but I have heard and said there is a reason people being their 4×4 trucks to the board meeting. For when the board meeting gets board they have a bed to lay in. For some board meetings that would be more than true I am sure. But that is not the case at all for the Austin Area Art Center Board meetings which I am a part of now. Today we had a subcommittee meeting and it certainly was not boring to say the least! It was completely the opposite. But how does that affect Solid Rock Photography?

Soli Deo GloriaPassing of the Baton

As many of you know, I am going out of business as Solid Rock Photography. I have decided that while I love my photography I need to give it up as a business and just do it for the fun of it. Meanwhile, I have a greater need to promote the Austin Area Art Center to a greater audience. That way, Austin, my home town and where I presently live can be a much better place for artists.

Today I met with the other committee member, David Albino, to talk about what has all been done in the Social Media realm for the Austin Area Art Center. Since a new board was elected last year, some things have changed for the better and now some other board members are stepping aside to bring younger ones on board. Last Saturday, the older board members passed on the baton which we took that baton a step further today. This meeting was the first step in a series of meetings that myself and many others through Prayer Works have been praying for. And that is why it was a kiss from heaven!

So how does that affect Solid Rock Photography? As you can tell, I have been working on my own marketing efforts of late. With going out of business, I have figured out how to utilize more of my marketing potential that I have sat on for several years. I have become more passionate about writing again which has yielded more followers here on Word Press as well as other media outlets. SRP has been the training grounds from which the business and marketing plans for the Austin Area Art Center have been fertilized. My own business mistakes will help foster and much better plan for the art center. Part of the reason their plan will be better is that other artists business owners are involved! That was something I tried to get with SRP but never could pull off. Today I felt reassured that letting go of own business plans to work with a larger group of committed artisans is the right way to go.

That Does Not Mean…

I do not go out of business without pushing through to the end though. I will keep marketing my work verbosely just like all business owners have to do to truly get their business going. I just started too late in the process to do it. So, with that said, I now give to you the Limited Time Promotions as they stand until 7AM 12-17-11 EST!

  1. Split Rock Lighthouse 36×24 for only $184. That is a huge savings factor for you the client. 10 such prints available.
  2. Soli Dei Gloria 11×14 for only $75.00. 10 Prints at that price available.
  3. Spring Flowers 8×10 only $45. Unheard of prices for an fine art canvas!

Artwork Sponsorship Pages by Fine Art America

1. Mississippi River Photos
2. Mt. Rainier Photos
3. Minnesota Greeting Cards

That makes several pages that at the end of the SRP days are helping to promote other artists art and ours together on a web page! For we have not been given things in life to keep them ourselves. State another way, a man is not given a kingdom to control it for himself. Rather it is to rule it for the betterment of those under his leadership. That is what SRP has been about but is now taking on a different whole realm that will decrease my business presence to increase the presence of others. I will still do photography but not as a business anymore.

No Bed Needed Here!

Today’s meeting was exciting to say the least. No boredom there. It will be exciting to help out others in this endeavor and see what God all has in mind for me to learn and grown into! You can be a part of it and keep praying for the Austin Area Art Center. You won’t be alone in that endeavor! So just before you go to bed, please ask the Lord to bless the efforts of the art center and Austin as we go through a large visioning process to make Austin a better place!

Sail Away–An Adventure Beyond Life as an Artist

Sail Away

It was a colder and dreary day when I was last in the Apostle Islands National Lake Shore. It was iffy if the tour boat would even head out on the water. Yet there was something in me that said if it goes, go on it. But what was there there to see in the sky laden with moisture and occasionally letting it go? After all, even the birds were just sitting around and not trying to make there way through the dense blue and gray skies. So why head out on the water?

As long as the tour company said they would head out, I determined I would go. For it was really my only day to be in the area that I could go out on the water. So we headed out and they began by telling their story. I do not remember that very well at all. I knew I was after some photos that day and so I headed above deck to the open air.  It was indeed thick with vapor–to the point of me at times hiding around doors to the open air. I did not want to get the camera saturated at all as I needed it for the rest of my trip to Algonquin Provincial Park and back. I only got three images that whole time on the tour that turned out at all. The rest were too gray and very dismal in perspective. But of those three I have that turned out, I think of them when I am not doing as well as I could be. Then I am reminded of the fact that since I saw anything that trip into the Apostles, there was a great light shining through the clouds although very filtered.

That is not unlike the valleys that we travel as humans. It may seem like we are at a really low spot and indeed some artists like myself are with their art. I just heard that one of my cousins state that a gift for her mother of a Chromalux wall mural (2×3) was too expensive for their taste even with the daily deals I am doing regularly. That might surely be the case but that is a sign of our times as well which bring us in America to a big valley that we must cross. Where is the hope that we need in a dark and dismal valley experience?

I have been there with my art but I am happy to say to the adventure ahead seems a lot brighter in the long run then it surely has in the past 1.5 years.  That peace that passes all understanding is a result of doing a lot of relaxing, reflecting, and rejuvenating. I am not a fortuneteller in the least—matter of fact, I do not believe in them. Rather, I put my trust in God to bring me to life beyond the years of Solid Rock Photography and that is where the adventure begins. Anyone want to come along on the ride not to be the adventure but to live an adventure?

Chromalux Wall Mural

There is no real way to describe these. You have to see one to believe it and that is why I put the photo up. You can do them as a collage or you can do them as one solid photo like you see in this one of my mothers. The tiles are 6″x6″ tiles and can come all the way from a 1×1 to 6×4 tiles. They are a frameless product and come with the metal bar hang them on. The clamps are also included. Prices range from $97-$520 at regular prices. Under the daily deals, they are less but how much less is based on the daily deal which today’s is 15%. They are truly a really cool way to display art and come with a high gloss finish on dye sub printed hardboard–a plastic composite material. Now if a wall mural is not your gig but you like this frameless idea, they do come in 5×7 and 8×10 or 11×4 sizes as solo photos. Long and short, once you get them you do not need anything else to display them other then a wall or a table. For they are frameless!

The Lover Part Two–Not Budgeting

Budgeting 101

Any good business goes through a process every year at year end–either fiscal or calendar–to figure out what their profit margin was so as to project for next year. I am not an accountant and so this part of my photography business has been a challenge. It surely is not my love. Oh to share this with someone potentially some day!

As I close up my business venture as Solid Rock Photography I look forward to promoting the Austin Area Art Center more and more. I found out that trying to promote them and my own photography was just too much to do along with working. Now that I am on the board for the Center as well as the Social Media Coordinator, my energy will kind of be spent helping out other artists. Now that is something that my Lover’s heart came to do–to serve rather than to be served and that is my heart for other artists in this area. Hence, I am looking forward to writing articles about all of the different art facets of the small town and surrounding area. You can follow those writing by keeping an eye on my Austin Area Art Examiners Page.

Just today I wrote an article on upcoming opportunities there are for artists in Austin. It was not a hard article to write considering I am writing two blog entries per day. I must like writing, right? It is part of how the Lover is expressed in me. Other artists are different and do watercolor, pastels, pen and ink, and more which are things I just do not have the gift of doing. Therefore, my options for helping them out are to write about them thereby promoting them and their talents. At any rate, I am going to try and write about three articles a week yet for the arts community here in Austin. That includes performing and visual

arts. I should have plenty to write about in reality.

Today’s article for the center was consumed with promoting membership! The Art Center is having a membership drive and all new members are allowed to have up to 6 images submitted for the New Members Show next month. Talk about a way to get your work to the greater Austin area and beyond. Become a member now and have your membership good all the way through 2012! To read more about how the Art Center is going to be growing, subscribe to the column I write or “like” them on Facebook. Either way works for the Center but the greater Austin area arts members will be helped by my columns more than anything on Facebook. Soon the Center will be on Twitter on it’s own account. Right now I use mine to get their word out. Eventually, we will have a listing on  Fine Art America, Minnesota Arts.org, and even on LinkedIn.com eventually! As a board, we are committed to truly moving ahead. The best part about this whole subject is I will be the only one doing the budget work for the center. That is fine with me!

The Lover–Photography

Modern Photography

Photography has drastically changed over the years in the sense of the technology. Advances in the digital realm to HDR and who knows what is next have changed the landscape. Throw in the fact of digital manipulation and you have another whole aspect to the field. With all these changes it might be thought that photography is not really photography anymore. It’s digital art all the way through and through. However, there are some photographers, myself included, that still are as purists as we can be in regards to what the camera is truly seeing. Purity in photography to me is like a pure and holy lover.

Have you ever…

I know there are cameras and more cameras out there. But that doesn’t make one a photographer just because they take snapshots. That is not to say one cannot get “lucky” and get a great shot. It can happen that. But, have you ever looked at a photo and gazed upon it for a long time. Have you ever looked at a professional photograph of your beloved and wondered why you like it? Have you ever gone to a fine art gallery and viewed some award winning art to investigate it?

For instance, here is one for you! Gaze upon it. Study it and see if you can tell me why you like it? Or, tell me where you might be sitting in this photo if you were to be in it. Next, tell me why you would be where you would be. Trees along the St. Croix National Scenic River Way offer a calming nature to any causual observer.

Now, I can tell you this, I have not doctored the image in any way. Remember, I am a purist. Second thing, it was in what I considered a pure environment, therefore it was a “kiss from heaven” as John Eldredge talks about at the beginning of the Lover chapter in Fathered By God–a book I highly recommend any man longing for a deeper meaning to life to read! It certainly was a very intimate spot for my soul to truly ponder about my life. Matter of fact, it was one of the highlights of that trip until the following morning when the train on the mile high bridge woke Thom and myself up! Back to the point though, where would you see yourself sitting and why? As John would say,  pause in the journey and write your answer down–only put it as a comment back to me. Modern twist on a theme.

Good photography does more that just pull you into a image! It turns on one or more senses. It is composed in such a way that your eye cannot help but dance around in the image. It usually evokes feelings. It allows one to contemplate which is what life is all about and the Lover ought to do. It is emotive. It is usually crisp or dreamy depending on how the artist created it thereby trying to summon some part of the soul. Again, this is what a Lover does as well.

Photography as an art form also can awaken the lover within us especially within nature photography. For me, it definitely brings out the Lover in me. Being out there in the wild blue yonder allows me to relax, reflect, and rejuvenate which is what a lover should do as well. I am more struck by the Beautiful Creator when in His wonderful creation. Even under the curse of sin, this world still speaks forth the glory of the Lord day in and day out! Now the only thing that would make being out there better, at least in my mind and heart, would be to share these moments with my life long lover who is yet to be found.

I love photography and will keep doing it for fun no doubt. But there comes a time in life when one is so busy battling for life that something has be given up to get life back. After all, finding that lover takes resources away from writing blogs, doing posts on Facebook, marketing ones work, and it costs money to find that one let alone “paying for the right one when you find her,” and so forth. When things you do or physical things take over building relationships, life is out of balance. That’s where I am at and that is why I am offering so many different deals this month with SRP! I am going out of business at the end of the month to pursue relationships and other opportunities.

Profits–More Than Dollars and Cents

Framing Projects

Not too many people who have gotten portraits from me have wanted them framed. More of clients that wanted me to frame prints have been my fine art clients. Today however, I have been working on a project from each side of my business for which I am grateful. There is little doubt that this could be my best month ever in business at Solid Rock Photography. Some would then wonder why I am getting out of business and my answer would be the Profits Are More Than Dollars and Cents.”

This week I meet with a client that I will be photographing their family on December 26 at their house outside of Cannon Falls, Minnesota. They have a very nice home out in the bluff country. The house is at the end of a long driveway which made me wonder if I was on the right track. I certainly was on the right track and felt another kiss from Heaven. When I got into the house and put my samples down, I felt like this was going to be a good conversation and it certainly was. They were very interested in what I had along for samples, Sunrise on Aluminum which was featured on my blog a few days ago, and some of my signature line of frames and glass samples. Once their questions that way were answered, we talked about what they wanted to have for final product for the family. That lead to talking about each of their kids and what they were like and of course what they really wanted for their house. Hearing about their family and sharing with them why I do my photography was worth more than just the fact of what they want for end product. Knowing I can give them something they will indeed treasure for many years to come, is priceless.

As you maybe know, I had an open house this last weekend. Traffic at the open house was less then what I wished for though I was grateful that most who came spent money. One of my clients who previously bought a Limited Edition Print on Aluminum of Split Rock Lighthouse, saw a print she couldn’t hardly pass up. Hyland in Fall is a treasure to me and I am glad it will be to her and her husband. Being this couple has been in my life for a long time–since I was a little lad, it is a special treasure to custom frame another print for them.

All of that to say this. I am very grateful for each of my clients and I will miss them. Some of my clients I didn’t know real well. Others, I knew very well. And, for those I really got to service–such as custom framing and custom portrait work, it was a special treasure. When you do custom work you really do get to know your clients rather well which has been a big blessing. Thank you to all of you who have acquired something from Solid Rock Photography.

Speaking of Priceless

The Here I Am image was priceless as well. Getting this good of image of a moving bird for me is really rare. So, this was priceless. To augment that point though is the fact that without my father’s help in getting this photo, it would not have happened at all. Reason, we were both trying to get images of this bird. It kept taunting us with what way it would go when finally my father was able to turn it towards where I was. I then had to get into position to get it. I was down on all fours just about to get it as it came within a few feet of me getting the image. I lost my balance and had to stand up quickly when I took it. Once I got my sight back, the bird was no where to be found. I remember the feeling well and to this day, it is another kiss from heaven. Priceless and hence the reason, Here I AM! It is also available as you see it to the right in my Framed Fine Art Gallery. Use the daily discount code from today (17DAYSTOGO) and save 17% on the framed fine art price! TODAY ONLY THAT MAKES IT ONLY $124.50 plus tax and shipping. Not bad for a 99% UV blocked framed fine art piece in a black metal frame with a bright white matte. Get it while you can at this price!

Hope for a Gray Day–One of my Favorite Images

Lost–Finding the Way in the Snow

There is something to be said about knowing where you are. Then again, the opposite is true to as it helps you realize that knowing how to get to where you are going is very reassuring. That lesson has been learned many times over for me as I travel with my regular job. But it was never more true then when hiking with two other guys on a trip in the Wenatchee National Forest in the Cascades of Washington State.

The three of us were working for Stone Water Ranch, a Christian based adventure organization headquartered in Plain Washington. Because safety is critical in the adventure based world, we had to recon several different areas early on in the season to check trail conditions and tent sits and so forth. On this particular trip to Pear and Top Lakes, the trail ended up in a lot of snow yet. With that in mind, we had to use our trail finding skills to get to the lake. We did the best we could and if in doubt, seek a high spot to see if you can get some sense of where you are! If nothing else, the view is usually worth it. So we kept putting one foot ahead of the other through the snow and came up to our vantage point and what a site we beheld. I was thrilled to be there at that point in the day as the light, a kiss from heaven, was perfect to capture the feeling–vulnerability on a ledge packed with snow by the wind, the joy of a cross in the wilderness, the peace of the moment, the idea that we will get to where we are going, and more. After we paused for a few minutes, we surveyed the area and headed down the ridge to where we figured the first lake and our tent spot would be for the night. Sure enough, we get to the lake and it has melted out already but there is snow all around it yet. No big deal! We were prepared for that. But, we were not satisfied in finding Top Lake. There was another yet to find that day–Pear Lake.

After getting camp set up for the night’s lodging, we took off to Pear Lake and what a beautiful hike it was through the getting very deep snow. At points, we were physically tested in getting there as the snow was on a steeper rocky slope to get to the lake. However, we we would not be stopped as long as we used our brains as well as our bronze. We were rewarded with a beautiful summer view of a high mountain lake in snow! Yes, I said summer and snow in the same sentence and called it beautiful. It was so nice that I said to myself that I would sometime that summer hike it again to see what it looked like. What a beautiful sight it was with flowers and more when I came back. Another blessing from above was given when I went back!

Lost in the Wilderness of the Soul

I can say beyond a shadow of doubt that I have wandered around in the wilderness of the soul a time or two. If I had not done that, I would not have been human. And that is partially why wondering around in the woods is very symbolic to me of real life. Those who have followed my blog know that for the last year and half I have been doing a lot of literal wondering around Southern Minnesota for work which in turn has had me wondering around my soul a fair amount as well. I feel I have replayed the going to higher ground to check out the landscape story a time or five lately. Now I am coming down off of the mountain top of the season for my regular work–the valley is below. The valley though can be just as tough as the mountain climbing though. But I am just as confident now about where I am going as I was when hiking in the Cascades. For I have been given a great peace that shutting down Solid Rock Photography is the way to go.

  4. Hope for a Gray Day

  5. The song that is coming to mind of late is “I Am Dreaming of a White Christmas.” I prefer a white Christmas but of late here in southern Minnesota, we have had gray raining skies. That doesn’t bode well for snow. It has been cloudy and murky. Yet each day there is hope for a better day. Reason, the Light of the World came into His wonderful creation to redeem His chosen people! While there are definitely gray days in all of our lives, there truly is hope because even seeing the gray color means there is a great SON out there who showers down new mercies everyday. It is just a matter of us seeing them for what they are and not for what they not. Head to the higher ground to get the view for the hope of a gray day.

Moving forward with 18 Days To Go–Return to Life

Last Few Days…

I am amazed at what the last few days have been like for me. I have witnessed many reflections from heaven much like I say on the day I took, Rainier Reflection. I remember the day well as it was after work one day at Paradise when I just felt I had to get away from people to recharge. For whatever reason, I felt the need to go to Reflection Lake and just sit with my camera. What a blessing it was and to this day still is in my mind.

I have been building a profile on a online dating service of late and have started to find some connections there that are to say the least fun. I have shied away from these dating services for a long time as I know I will have to pay for them to use their services. My reluctance to them is I will pay for a woman when I find her. Though because a childhood friend of mine recently got engaged to someone on this site, I thought I would give it a try. And so the pursuit goes. The pursuit though was filled with a blessing yesterday through one friend now on that site. You see, I told her about the fact I was going out of business. I told her about my daily deals I am doing and how the sale went. She, Ashley, caught the fact I love nature photography and that is part and parcel to my soul. She then reminded me of what I long for that desire to be!

Sounds like you’re really passionate about your photography…but I can see how it could be overwhelming having to run an entire side business along with a regular job too.  But it’s not like you’re required to give it up completely, it will probably be nice to just keep it as a hobby for when you have time.

That is what it will be. I will keep blogging about my travels and even writing more about them again on Examiner.com shortly. Thanks to Ashley for helping me see again that I won’t be able to just set a camera down and never pick it up again. Thank also to her for reflecting back to me a Kiss From Heaven. God knows my heart for photography and  I am sure He will not let that sit idol from here forward.

Reflection

Life is really faced paced. Kind if like the water going over the Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River basically 24×7 hours of the week 365 days a year, although in winter it has frozen over! Life does not stop. It keeps flowing yet there are opportunities along the way to truly reflect on life. Take those times to do just that.

As I wrap up SRP, I am grateful to those who encouraged me along the way. I am grateful for the many lessons it has indeed taught me. And now I move into another phase of life that will indeed rejuvenate me. Praying towards that end… Thanks goes out to those who have prayed for through Prayer Works as well!

Vision in Artistry

Prayer candles

“It Begins with you as an Artist!”

“It being with you as an artist. You are endowed with success. You have the power to create something, that before you imagined it did not exist, you are capable of bringing inner vision to outer form… You possess a unique power to elicit a response, alter a person’s consciousness and have a major impact on those who see your work.” Renee Phillips “The Artrepreneur Coach”

This quote has been on my whiteboard for a while this fall and I am often reminded that as an artist I do have some influence over others who view my work. Just recently that was true with a conversation I was having on my personal page on Facebook with a friend. She saw my post of a limited time promotional canvas print of the Grand Canyon and was immediately brought back to the canyon when she hiked it from rim to rim. She did this not only once but several times. She mentioned how this particular image pulled her right back to the canyon. I mentioned that I had hoped that while in the canyon she was able to do some relaxing, reflecting, and rejuvenating. After all, if one did not do that while out there, she missed a chance for divine interaction. Thankfully, she was able to do that or as Cheryl said, “I love the Grand Canyon. Hiked it rim to rim quite a few times now. For me, that one photo pulls me back into it and into it is where I feel rooted, centered, and yup – definitely relaxed and reflective.” This discussion happened all because …

One thing I have learned in my days as Solid Rock Photography that I truly wanted to share my photos with others because when I took them they usually had a serenity to them that transcended the actual moment of capture. They drew out in me a deeper reality then I ever thought would be the case. Perhaps that is the Lover side of my life, as John Eldredge talks about in Fathered by God, that was being awakened by the master of all beauty! For there is that time in life too when poems, photos, art, and so forth awaken a man to say there is more to life then just being a warrior. Perhaps each photo taught me more about myself and that is what I wanted to share with viewers. Perhaps the learning still goes on for me when I look again and again at some of my images much like the one of the Prayer Candles. And while all of that is true, my core was to inspire others to do just what I was doing when I took the images. Now I am back to a time in life when I must do what I have tried to encourage others to do–”be still, and know I am God.”

That is why I am going out of business as Solid Rock Photography. I need to realign myself to that still small voice that is not within me by my own power or thought. But that has come upon me kind of like a gentle tide washing up on shore. Little reminders of times past have inspired me to make changes and one such change is shutting down SRP! Hence, much thought has gone into this process and that is why I am offering daily discounts on my art collection on my two main online portfolios. Today’s daily deals are 19% off anything on either site listed below. To get this discount, make sure to use the coupon code as follows per site.

  1. Fine Art America Portfolio Coupon Code GHFTGX You can also shop it on FACEBOOK or through this link.
  2. Photo Shelter Personal Archive Coupon Code 19DAYSTOGO You can shop our entire art collection from this archive including framed fine art like The Prayer Candles. That means you can save 19% on all of my framed fine art collection or any new image of mine. Get it on various mediums from metal prints to canvas and any style of fine art papers and more! The possibilities are endless and so are the lessons from each photo at least to me.

  3. National Grasslands in the Badlands National Park Canvas Print by Solid Rock Photography Dustin DeBoerPurchase a 36.00″ x 24.00″ stretched canvas print it for the promotional price of only $94.

The power to created something that before you imagined it did not exists… You possess a unique power to elicit a s response… impact on those who see your work… these aspects are not unique to artists. For they can be said of other personal characteristics. For me, the question comes down to how are impacting those around and are we making the world a better place. If we are not doing that, we really ought to take time to relax, reflect, and rejuvenate–” or be still, and know, I am God.”

I Like the Sun and the SON!

I certainly do not know about you but I certainly like the sun! It is so bright and warming this time of year. It makes the snow up here in the north county glisten for all it is worth. It makes me think of something so special that I will have to wait to share it.

God PaintedHere is a few things to share with you first! I am so thankful for those who came by yesterday at the open house. Reason, they all bought some fine art from me. They bought the remaining keepsake boxes I have here. There are more at the Austin Area Art Center in Austin, Minnesota, at their Christmas sale. I also sold three prints of which will be a big surprise for the wife of a good friend of mine. One print she has liked for a while. How nice of her husband to do that for her! On top of that, one of the ready to frame pieces sold yesterday and then the client wanted it framed. Not only did she get the discount on ready to frame print in inventory, she also got 15% off of the custom framing. I felt really blessed beyond measures to have them all purchase what they did and why they did it. That’s right, one other stopped by to purchase Christmas presents for his wife, and two sisters! Those were the Keepsake Mahogany Boxes that had a ceramic tile on top! I think there are three or four of them at the Center if anyone wants to get them there.

Now for the daily share Limited Time Promotion deals. There are three of them good for today through 5pm EST!

Now for the other share! I truly enjoy the sunlight but I enjoy and treasure the SON light even more. For this time of year, Christmas not Holiday, is special because Christ came to this earth to redeem us from our darkness called sin. And, that is something to treasure way more than any gift one can purchase from any of my stores. May this Christmas season be a wonderful time of receiving the SON light that lights the world!

Merry Christmas! from Dustin DeBoer of Solid Rock Photography
